San Diego, CA, June 7, 2006 – The future just got a little brighter for children across the San Diego region. The San Diego Foundation announced today that Todd and Mari Gutschow have made a $1 million endowment gift to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. Inspired by The San Diego Foundation’s Endow San Diego initiative, this endowment is intended to ensure the future of the quality programs and facilities for the nonprofit organization region-wide.

“I am impressed with the dedication, commitment and professionalism of this organization. Mari and I also believe in the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs which is focused on helping children achieve their potential,” stated Todd Gutschow regarding why he chose to endow the organization.

Their gift is in the form of a charitable remainder trust, for which they have now irrevocably designated the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego as the beneficiary. “We want this gift to help ensure that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will be able to continue to help future generations of children long after Mari and I are gone.”

Danny Sherlock, president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego knows that “raising the funds needed to serve our members is a constant battle. An endowment will give us financial security and allow us to concentrate our efforts on accomplishing our mission.” Grateful for the gift, Sherlock believes, “the leadership demonstrated by Todd and Mari Gutschow in establishing this irrevocable trust sets an example for others to emulate. This is just one of many ways in which they have given generously of their time, talent and treasure to benefit the children of San Diego County.”

"This is another great example of people caring about others. The Gutschow's gift will help young people they will never meet,” said Bob Kelly, president and CEO of The San Diego Foundation. “Because it will reside in an endowment, it will go on forever. This is civil society at work, caring for the common good. It's what our country was built on and it's how it needs to continue."

Endow San Diego is a regional, multi-year initiative designed to build permanent endowments on behalf of individuals and organizations committed to improving the quality of life for all San Diegans. The Boys and Girls Clubs have joined the Endow San Diego Nonprofit Partnership with the intent to build the endowment funds that will support their organization now and for generations to come.

Since July 1, 2005, Endow San Diego has engaged 204 Nonprofit Partners and generated 113 new endowments: 53 residing at The Foundation and 60 among our Nonprofit Partners. Of these endowments, 31 were established by individuals, with the balance established by organizations. These new endowments now total over $11 million, with $5.2 million held at The Foundation and $6 million spread throughout the community.

When asked about giving, the Gutschows believe you “can talk about giving to your favorite cause or organization, but what really matters is taking that step of making the gift. There are so many great organizations in our community that are working every day to make San Diego a better place. Each of us needs to do what we can to help these organizations succeed. It is the only way that we can ensure a better future for the San Diego region.”
